George Alhassan believes no current Black stars stars player can make the 1982 Afcon squad

George Alhassan, a former Ghanaian international football player berates the current crop of players in the Black Star’s setup. He made the revelation on Starr Fm.

George Alhassan was nicknamed Jair, referring to Jairzinho, a former Brazilian player due to the similarities in their playing style. He is best known for his exploits in the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, which saw him lift the trophy for the second time in his career.

George Alhassan believes that the current Black stars team is very weak compared to the previous ones. He asserted that no single player in the current Black Star’s team could make the starting lineup of the 1982 African Cup winning team.

He however emphasized that only Thomas Partey could make the bench. At the time that he made this statement, Mohammed Kudus has not risen to his current level, hence it’s understandable he was left out.

Now considering Mohammed Kudus’ current status in world football, and his contributions to the Black stars team, George could consider altering his statement.


George Alhassan made several appearances for the Ghana national football team, including qualifying matches for several FIFA World Cups. In 1978, he played for the Ghana squad who won the African Cup of Nations in home soil.

Four years later he helped Ghana regain the title successfully, being the top scorer of the tournament with four goals, including two against Algeria in the semifinal and one in the final against hosts Libya.

During his career he played in Ghana, Gabon and Korea. He played for Accra Great Olympics from 1974 to 1982 and later returned to play in 1985 to 1990. In the process he won the Ghana Premier League in his debut season in 1974.

From 1982 to 1984, he played for FC 105 Libreville in Gabon, where he won two trophies, the Gabon Championnat National D1 in 1983 and the Coupe du Gabon Interclubs in 1984.

While playing for Great Olympics George Alhassan won the Ghana Premier League in his debut season, 1974. He also won the Coveted Ghana Premier League Top Scorer award two times ( 1977 and 1985).

During his time with FC 105 Libreville in Gabon, he won two trophies (Gabon Championnat National D1 in 1983, and the Coupe du Gabon Interclubs in1984).

On the international front, he won two African Cup of Nations Trophies. One in 1978 and the other in 1982. He won the Golden boot in the later tournament. He was also part of the Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament in 1982.

In October 2020, George Alhassan was appointed as the Welfare Officer of his former club Accra Great Olympics.
