Tresor Mputu, a former Congolese and TP Mazembe football player saw his dream move to Arsenal in 2007 collapse at the last minute. He revealed how it happened In an Instagram live video.

Tresor Mputu joined TP Mazembe in 2002, and has been a pivotal figure in the club’s success ever since. In 2007, he helped his club reach the African Champions League by becoming the top goalscorer of the competition with nine strikes, and also scoring two goals in the confederation Cup.


He also represented his country in many competitions, notably the African Cup of nations. Where he scored many goals to help his country.

Tresor Mputu claimed that he had trained with Arsenal for two months and that the club’s coaches liked his performances.

However, the Gunners struggled to reach an agreement with his team back home because they tried to sign him for a small fee given that he wasn’t playing for any top European side at the time.

His club president then asked for him to return to his country. He revealed that it was later that Wenger explained what had happened to him.

“I’d spent two months in London training with Arsenal alongside Adebayor and many others, and they rated me. Then, the president (of TP Mazembe), Moïse Katumbi, came to discuss with the English club’s board, and he went back immediately.

“I wasn’t told what they had spoken about. It’s only later that I learned Arsenal didn’t try and pay a lot. Arsène Wenger called me, confirming this information, to tell me that if a player comes from Africa, you always buy him for less and then percentages make it up afterwards. The next day, Mazembe’s accountant would tell me that the president said we needed to go back”.

Mputu continued to play for Mazembe after his failed move to Arsenal .He represented them not only in the domestic league but also in the continental competitions (the Caf champions and confederation Cup). In 2009 and 2010 he captained Mazembe to back to back CAF Champions League titles.

In 2014 he signed with Angolan side Kabuscorp. But he only spent two seasons with the club. In July 2016, Mputu rejoined his old club TP Mazembe.

Mputu made his international debut in 2004 and became a regular in the squad. He represented his country at the 2006 African Cup of Nations tournament and was captain of the Congolese national team, leading the side in the 2013 African Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa.

In their first game of the tournament, Mputu scored for the Congolese in the 2–2 draw against pre-tournament favourites Ghana. He was exiled from the national team for five years, but was later recalled to the team in November 2018.
